Abstract

Vinyl chloride polymer films and thin sheets are produced by hot-rolling a mixture of (1) 100 parts by weight of an unplasticized homopolymer of vinyl chloride, or an unplasticized copolymer of at least 70% by weight of vinyl chloride and up to 30% by weight of one or more other polymerizable monomeric compounds, and (2) 0,5-10 parts by weight of polyethylene oxide with a D.P. between 50 and 400, polypropylene oxide with a D.P. between 10 and 100, or a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide with a D.P. between 10 and 400, at rolling temperatures between 120 DEG and 200 DEG C. The films produced may be heated for a short time at a temperature between 200 DEG and 300 DEG C. without using pressure and subsequently stretched at below 200 DEG C. The copolymers may contain a copolymerized acrylic acid ester, a vinyl ester or an ester of an alpha, beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, such as maleic acid. The polymers may contain as a stabilizer a small proportion of dibutyl-tin-bis-cyclohexyl thioglyoxalate, diphenyl-thiourea or monophenylurea. The p polyolefine oxide functions as a lubricant and the films produced are clear, smooth, and have a low water imbibition when stored in water.
