Abstract

Foamed flexible plastic sheeting having a deeply embossed surface is made by sintering a thin layer of dry blended thermoplastic resin particles and a plasticizer, which contains in the blend a blowing agent, at a temperature exceeding the decomposition point of said blowing agent, followed by embossing the surface of the layer with a cooled embossing roll (see Division B6). Suitable resins are vinyl chloride homopolymers, and copolymers with e.g. vinyl acetate and dialkyl maleates; a suitable blowing agent is azodicarbamide. Preferred particle size for the resin is about 15 microns; plasticizers mentioned include octyl benzoate, dioctyl phthalate, polyethylene glycol sebacate, and epoxidized soybean oil. Other components that may be included in the dry blend of resin, plasticizer and blowing agent are: stabilizers such as barium stearate, cadmium stearate, or zinc octoate; fillers such as silica, or calcium carbonate; stearic acid; pigments; and fungicides. The finished embossed sheet may optionally be coated with, e.g. acrylin or vinyl resins.
