Abstract

Microporous material is obtained by subjecting a sheet, which comprises a thermoplastic material such as a rubber or a polyvinyl resin, fine particles which may subsequently be removed, and a solvent which wholly or partially dissolves the thermoplastic material while having no deleterious effect on the fine particles. after the solvent has been wholly or in part removed, to mechanical work whereby the sheet is reduced in thickness or increased in another dimension so that adjacent particles are forced into intimate contact and their encapsulating membranes disrupted, the fine particles being then removed. In examples, a mixture is made from either polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride or a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, sodium chloride, methyl cyclohexanone and either dibutyl phthalate or polypropylene silicate and is sheeted to approximately 0.08 inch and then calendered to 0.02 inch, the solvent is then removed in an air oven and then the sheet calendered to 0.012 inch, and after leaching out the salt the microporous sheet is dried. Isophorone may also be used as the solvent. Specification 565,022 is referred to.ALSO:Microporous material is obtained by subjecting a material in sheet form which comprises a thermoplastic material such as rubber, fine particles which may subsequently be removed, and a solvent which wholly or partially dissolves the thermoplastic material while having no deleterious effect on the fine particles, after the solvent has been wholly or in part removed, to mechanical work whereby the sheet is reduced in thickness or increased in another dimension so that adjacent particles are forced into intimate contact and their encapsulating membranes disrupted, the fine particles being then removed. In an example, 23 lbs. of natural rubber is mixed with 100 lbs. of maize starch, 6.3 lbs. of sulphur, 0.4 lbs. of diphenylguanidine, 0.5 lbs. zinc oxide and 30 lbs. cyclohexanone, and the resulting dough extruded to form sheets 0.02 inches thick and then the solvent removed in an oven at 100 DEG C. The sheet is then calendered to reduce its thickness to 0.012 inch and then vulcanized, after which the sheets are treated first with sodium hydroxide solution and then with boiling water to produce a microporous ebonite material. Isophorone may also be used as the solvent. Specification 565,022, [Group IV], is referred to.
