Abstract

Hard expanded polyvinyl resin products are made by forming gas bubbles in a gel either simultaneously with or subsequent to the formation of the gel, the latter being made by heating a paste containing the resin and a plasticizer therefor which is volatile at room or slightly elevated temperature, heating the gel to expand the absorbed gas and subsequently removing the solvent. The gas bubbles may be formed by blowing agents such as azo-isobutyric dinitrile, diazoaminobenzene, dinitropentamethylene tetramine, urea, biuret, sodium bicarbonate or ferrous oxalate or by impregnating the gel with gases under high pressure, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The resins may be polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. Specified plasticizing solvents are acetone, dioxane, methyl ethyl ketone, isopropyl acetate, n-propyl acetate, tetrahydrofurane and mesityl oxide. The plaste may include stabilizers such as alumina, cadmium stearate, lead stearate and white lead. The product may be moulded into boards. Specification 580,743 is referred to.
