Abstract
Expanded vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers are prepared by forming gas bubbles in a gel formed by heating a paste of said polymer and a plasticiser which has no appreciable solvent or swelling action thereon at normal temperatures, but swells at and forms a gel at elevated temperatures, and heating the said gel sufficiently to enable it to retain its cellular structure. The gas bubbles may be formed by incorporating into the paste before the latter is gelled a blowing-agent such as diazoaminobenzene, sodium nitrite-ammonium chloride mixture, ammonium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate; or by submitting the gel to impregnation by an inert gas (nitrogen or carbon dioxide) under pressure at room temperature. Suitable plasticisers are dibutyl phthalate, dihexyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate. Fillers, pigments and cross-linking agents such as zinc oxide, may be incorporated into the gel or paste. In examples: (1) a polyvinyl chloride-dibutyl phthalate paste is kneaded with diazoaminobenzene, heated to gel and heated further to liberate the gas; (2) a polyvinyl chloride tricresyl phosphate paste is heated to gel, cooled, gassed and heated further. Specifications 500,298 and 578,513 are referred to.
