Abstract

Microporous polyvinyl chloride is made by mixing particles of polyvinyl chloride and particles of a filler of an average size of 100 microns together with a plasticizer, shaping the mixture into the form of a briquette which is heated in the open atmosphere, preferably at 350-380 DEG F., to form a gel, and soaking the briquette in a solvent for the filler, which is inert to the polyvinyl chloride, to leach out the filler particles. The filler may be sodium sulphate, chloride or nitrate, potassium chloride or lithium chloride, all of which may be washed out of the briquette by water. The plasticizer may be one or more of dioctyl phthalate, diisooctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl tetrachloro-phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, butyl benzyl sebacate and tetrahydrofurfuryl oleate. A stabilizer may also be incorporated.
