Abstract

A cellular plastic sponge is prepared by mixing a finely-divided plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, with a chemical blowing agent, e.g. p-tertiary butyl benzazide, dinitrosopentamethylene-tetramine and N,N1-dimethyl N,N1-dinitrosoterephthalimide and a plasticizer, e.g. tricresyl phosphate and di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, bringing the mixture to an elevated temperature and holding it at this temperature until the flowing agent decomposes to form gas cells, and then heating the resulting sponge to a higher temperature sufficient to toughen the sponge. Chlorinated paraffin, citric acid, basic lead carbonate, calcium stearate, and talc may also be present. The process is preferably carried out at atmospheric pressure.
