Abstract

Cellular vinyl chloride resins are made by expanding a plastisol by reacting therein water and a borohydride of sodium, potassium, rubidium or caesium (whereby hydrogen is liberated), and heating the expanded plastisol to gel and fuse it. The plastisol is a dispersion of a homopolymer of vinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride (e.g. with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or ethyl maleate) or a mixture of homopolymer and copolymer (e.g. a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and a vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer), dispersed in a liquid plasticizer (e.g. dioctyl phthalate, diisoctyl phthalate, isooctyl isodecyl phthalate, octyl butyl phthalate, butyl decyl phthalate, didecyl phthalate, dioctyl adipate, tricresyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate or acetyl tributyl citrate) and if desired additives such as stabilizers, fillers or colourants. Reaction between the borohydride and water is effected by lowering the pH and/or by heating. The borohydride may be added to the plastisol as such or in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersed in a plasticizer. Alternatively, separate plastisol components may be formed one containing the borohydride and the other the water and the two plastisols mixed in a mould.
