Abstract
A cellular structure is obtained in synthetic resinous materials capable of being softened by heat, excluding polythene, by incorporating into the material after mastication a blowing agent consisting of hydrogen peroxide or an organic peroxide, heating the mixture to a temperature sufficient to cause the blowing agent to form gas or vapour in a space permitting of limited expansion of the resinous mass, and while in the expanded state converting the mass into a rigid or elastic form. The organic peroxides may be urea peroxide, acetyl peroxide, or benzoyl peroxide. In examples (II) and (VIII) polyvinyl chloride plasticised with tricresyl phosphate is treated with benzoyl peroxide and acetyl peroxide and the mixture heated in moulds; (V) monomeric methyl methacrylate is partially polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and then potassium permanganate added to liberate oxygen and the polymerization completed; (IV) similarly styrene monomer is treated with a mixture of benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide; (VI) polyvinyl alcohol is treated with hydrogen peroxide and subsequently with sulphuric acid and formaldehyde. Specification 626,151 is referred to.ALSO:A cellular structure is obtained in natural or synthetic resinous materials capable of being softened by heat, excluding polythene, but including rubber and bituminous compositions, by incorporating into the resinous material after mastication a blowing agent consisting of hydrogen peroxide or an organic peroxide, heating the mixture to a temperature sufficient to cause the blowing agent to form gas or vapour in a space permitting of limited expansion of the resinous mass, and while in the expanded state converting the mass into a rigid or elastic form. The organic peroxides may be urea peroxide, acetyl peroxide, or benzoyl peroxide. In examples, rubber is plasticised on a mill, optionally with the addition of zinc oxide and stearic acid and then either damp benzoyl peroxide or whiting and hydrogen peroxide added and the mass heated first to evolve the gas and finally to vulcanise to soft or hard rubber. In a further example coal tar pitch is rendered porous with the aid of 5 per cent benzoyl peroxide solution. Specification 626,151 is referred to.
