Abstract

A process for preparing cellular material from normally solid thermoplastic aliphatic olefin polymers comprises homogenizing the polymer with at least one normally solid blowing agent and a cross-linking agent and heating the homogeneous composition in a mould at a temperature of from 80 DEG to 250 DEG C. at which the blowing agent decomposes to liberate the gas producing the blowing action. Preferably the polymer is a polyethylene of molecular weight 50,000 to 300,000, obtained by the lowpressure process, or 10,000 to 40,000 produced by the high-pressure process. p,p1-Oxy-bis(benzene-sulphohydrazide, azodicarbamide or dinitrisopentamethylene tetramine are preferred blowing agents. The cross-linking agents are defined as peroxides, hydroperoxides or their esters or mixtures thereof. A pressure exerted from outside by an inert gas or vapour can be used to prevent the gas developed by the blowing agent from leaving the material. Zinc, magnesium, calcium, cadmium and butyl stearates are specified as additives to retard the expansion and give more homogeneous cell distribution.ALSO:A process for preparing cellular material from normally solid thermoplastic aliphatic olefin polymers comprises homogenising the polymer with at least one normally solid blowing agent and a cross-linking agent and heating the homogeneous composition in a mould at a temperature of from 80 DEG C. to 250 DEG C. at which the blowing agent decomposes to liberate the gas producing the blowing action.
