Abstract

A vinyl chloride polymer plastisol is foamed by the incorporation of an inert gas, substantially free from hydrogen, in the form of bubbles with, in addition, a chemical or volatile liquid-blowing agent and blowing effected by heating and the blown plastisol stabilized by cooling. The plastisols may be plasticized polyvinyl chloride or plasticized copolymers prepared from vinyl chloride and, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride and acrylic esters. The inert gas is introduced in the plastisol in the form of bubbles under pressure or may be injected and distributed in the plastisol by mixing. When a volatile liquid blowing agent is used its boiling point at atmospheric pressure is preferably not above 50 DEG C. and is used in a proportion of 2-6% by weight of the plastisol. The chemical blowing agent used in the examples is "Genitron" O.B. which is a Registered Trade Mark for p,p1-oxy-bis-(benzene sulphonhydrazide). The plastisol with the incorporated inert gas and blowing agent may be deposited in a mould, on a non-adherent moving belt, or on or beneath a moving length of adherent fabric, or between two moving lengths of fabric and heated to effect or complete the blowing. Plasticizers include mixtures of phthalates and tritolyl phosphates.ALSO:A foamed plastisol of a vinyl chloride polymer is produced on a backing, e.g. fabric, by incorporating into the plastisol an inert gas in the form of bubbles with, in addition, a chemical or volatile liquid blowing agent, blowing the composition and stabilising the blown plastisol by cooling. The vinyl chloride polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or copolymers prepared from vinyl chloride and, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinylidine chloride and acrylic esters. The inert gas is introduced in the plastisol under pressure or may be injected and distributed in the plastisol by mixing. Plasticisers include mixtures of phthalates and tritolyl phosphates. In an example a plastisol of a vinyl chloride emulsion polymer with a plasticiser containing inert gas and blowing agent is caused to flow under a doctor blade and over a moving length of suitable fabric which is then passed through a conventional air-circulating oven, in which the gas bubbles contained in the plastisol are caused to expand, giving rise to a foam of medium density tenaciously adherent to the surface of the fabric, the whole structure then being stabilised by cooling.
