PERFECTIONNEMENTS A LA FABRICATION DE MATERIAUX MICRO-POREUXo
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF MICRO-POROUS MATERIALS
The present invention relates to the manufacture of micro-porous materials by a process in which fine particles are incorporated into a thermoplastic material using a solvent which completely or partially dissolves the thermoplastic material. -plastic while having no harmful effect on the fine particles, the paste obtained receiving the desired shapes by molding, the solvent being removed and the mass treated to remove the fine particles and leave micro-pores in the solid thermoplastic material. Fine particles can be 1,
powdered starch mixed with a thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride and a solvent such as methyl cyclohexanone. The dough is brought to an extrusion apparatus from where it comes out in the form of sheets.
It is then transported to an oven or heating chamber: Cage to evaporate the methyl-cyclohexanone which is recovered for use again. To remove starch, the leaf is treated with boiling sulfuric acid. Boiling water treatment preferably precedes acid treatment to swell the starch grains and appreciably expand the sheet in its three dimensions. This preliminary treatment in boiling water greatly improves the permeability of the finished micro-porous material.
It is believed that the starch particles become encysted in membranes of the thermoplastic material during mixing and manufacturing, and in the absence of preliminary treatment with boiling water. these membranes tend to retain a more or less cellular structure. The breakage caused by the swelling of the starch grains ensures a higher degree of intercommunication between the cells and therefore gives a greater permeability to the finished material.
Micro-pores can be produced by materials other than starch, for example by chlorides, sulphates and carbonates of sodium.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
diurnal potassium and magnesium. The choice of the material producing the micro-pores should be governed by the fact that this material should exist in the form of a uniform fine powder and should be easily drawn out of the plasticized material. The price and conditions of manufacture should also be taken into account. consideration.
It has now been found that the encystment of the pore-forming material in the thermoplastic material can be reduced and that the micro-porosity of the product obtained can be increased by adding to the paste at the time of mixing a more or less liquid. incompatible with the thermoplastic material and the solvent and capable of being eliminated during the subsequent training. The most common liquids which meet these conditions are water and polyhydric alcohols, such as 1-ethylene glycol,, propylene glycol and glycerin. A very small amount added to the dough gives higher permeability to the finished product.
If fine particles of a salt, for example sodium chloride, are used, to form the micropores ,,, the addition to the paste of an incompatible liquid is particularly advantageous because with a such salt it is not possible to make use of the previously mentioned swelling effect existing when starch is employed as the pore-forming material.;, with the result that part of the salt particles may remain encysted and n to be difficult to train.
The invention resides in the incorporation into the mixture comprising a thermo-plastic material, a pore-forming material and a solvent for the thermo-plastic material not having a deleterious effect on the pore-forming material, of a liquid more or less incompatible with the thermoplastic material and the solvent and capable of being removed during the subsequent entrainment applied to remove the pore-forming material.
The invention further comprises incorporating water or one of the polyhydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerin into the mixture of thermoplastic material, pore forming material and solvent.
In the accompanying drawings
In fig. 1 The pore-forming ingredient particles 1 are schematically shown as being separately dispersed in the thermoplastic material 2 and encysted therein. In fig. 2, 1, pore-forming ingredient 1 and plastic 2 are shown again, but with the addition of incompatible liquid 3 which can be assumed to be dispersed in droplets interrupting the continuity of the thermoplastic material and the encystment of the pore-forming ingredient by this material. The entrainment of the ingredient forming the pores is therefore facilitated, and the voids obtained are connected by channels whose size and position correspond to those of the droplets of incompatible liquid, also removed by entrainment.
In an advantageous application of the invention, 100 parts by weight of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride are mixed with 700 parts of sodium chloride, 200 parts of methyl-cyclohexanone and 25 parts of glycerin. The mixture is carried out in a closed container at approximately 100 ° C. for approximately 2 hours.
The mass is then extruded into a sheet of about 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) and is immediately calendered to a thickness of 0.02 inch (0.5 mm) After removal of methyl cyclohexanone by evaporator - tion, the material is subjected to entrainment with water, preferably hot or boiling, to extract the salt and glycerin and then dried.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
If water is used as the incompatible liquid, the 25 parts of glycerin can be replaced by 50 parts of water and proceed as above. Although water exerts a solvent action on the pore-forming material, when the latter is a water soluble substance, such as sodium chloride ,,, it does not adversely affect the qualities of the product when it is. When used in a reduced amount as indicated, however, high boiling liquids will be preferred over water because of the loss of water by evaporation during mixing.
The improvement in the permeability of the finished product resulting from the use of an incompatible liquid in the mixture can be considerable and will vary depending on the amount present. In the example cited, where 25 parts of glycerin are used, the air permeability can be evaluated at 100. With 15 parts of glycerin, the air permeability would be 25, and 8 with 10 parts of glycerin. Without glycerin, the air permeability would be negligible.
Another advantage is the training speed, which is greatly increased by the presence of an incompatible liquid such as glycerin in the mixture.
Starch is a suitable material for creating microporosity because any variety, for example mat starch has a relatively uniform particle size, will give the microporous material an equally uniform pore size. , which is of great importance because the passage through a material containing pores of different sizes is preferably carried out through the larger pores, while the smaller ones remain unused.
It is difficult to obtain the salts indicated above in the form of particles of uniform size. Grinding yields particles of widely varying size and complicated separation and sizing procedures must be used to remove large particles and regrind them. Despite these methods, the range of grain sizes is too wide, the larger size possibly being 20 times larger than the smaller.
The best results have been obtained by spray drying an aqueous solution of the salt. For example, a 25% solution of sodium chloride in water is directed onto a rotating metal disc which rejects it in the form of small droplets into a chamber through which a current of hot air passes. The water in each droplet evaporates almost immediately, and the salt in the droplet remains as a small particle.
Under favorable working conditions, the particle diameter may vary from about 0.02mm to 0.05mm, but since some larger particles may be present, it is best to pass the material through a 150mm silk screen. mesh, for example retaining particles with a diameter greater than 0.1 mm.
If it is desired that the microporous material have marked flexibility and elongation capacity, a plasticizer can be added after mixing the dough. For example, in the mixture below., The dibutyl-phthalate remains to plasticize the polyvinyl chloride after the evaporation of the methyl-cyclohexanone and the entrainment of the salt and the glycerin.

Preferably, a non-migrating plasticizer will be used,
because plasticizers of the dibutylphthalate type tend to exude due to the extremely porous state of the product obtained. The presence of glycerin promotes salt entrainment and improves the permeability of the product abtenuo
Other thermoplastics than polyvinyl chloride can be used. For example ..
polymers resulting from the simultaneous polymerization of vinyl halides with other ethylenic substitutes of the CH2 = C # type, such as copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, can be transformed into micro-porous materials by the incorporation of fine particles with the help of a solvent for the copolymer. The permeability of the microporous material obtained is improved by the application of the invention. When the microporous material is to have flexibility and elongation capacity, internal plasticization caused by copolymerization is an advantage and can reduce the amount of additional plasticizer required.
The rubber is essentially thermoplastic until the moment of vulcanization when molecular transverse bonds determine an irreversible fixation.
A mixture of rubber, vulcanizing agents, fine particles of a pore-forming material, a rubber solvent and a liquid such as glycerin can acquire the desired shapes by molding followed by evaporation of the solvent. While the material is in a state allowing easy removal of fine particles and ensuring satisfactory permeability of the finished product, it is subjected to the vulcanization temperature, for example 140 ° C, for 4 hours, then the fine particles are removed. of ingredients forming the pareso
As an example of the application of the invention to the manufacture of microporous rubber sheets, 23 pounds (10.3 kg) of natural rubber is mixed with 100 pounds (45 kg) of starch. but, 6,
3 lbs (2.8 kg) sulfur 0.4 lbs (0.18 kg) diphenyl guanidine and 0.5 lbs (0.22 kg) zinc oxide. Mixing takes place on a rolling mill and the mixed material is then taken to an internal mixer where 30 pounds (13 kg) of methyl cyclohexanone and 5 parts of glycerin are added thereto.
The internal mixer is equipped with a reflux condenser and heated to 60 Co. The paste obtained is carried to an extruder from which it comes out in the form of a sheet 0.020 inch (0.5 mm) thick.
The solvent is removed in a 100 Ca oven. The sheet is cut into pieces which are stacked with interleaved sheets of paper and placed in a closed container for vulcanization. After vulcanization. the leaves are treated for 1 hour in a 1% sodium hydroxide solution at 100 ° C., then for 1/2 hour in washing water. boiling. about. The mixture and the procedure are chosen to transform the rubber into ebonite (fully vulcanized state) but it goes without saying that a more flexible product can be obtained by reducing the proportions of vulcanizing agents and the degree of vulcanization.
Although methyl-cyclohexanone is used as a solvent in the examples, other solvents can be used, isophorone for example.
