Abstract

Microporous material is prepared by drymixing a powdered synthetic resin and a powdered pore-forming material capable of being subsequently leached out, adding thereto a solvent which is sufficiently active as a plasticizer of the resin to gel the mixture into a cohesive mass, and which is present in amount sufficient for said gelling action and within the absorption capability of the resin in avoidance of surface stickiness, working said mixture at a temperature at which further plasticization of the resin occurs, shaping, leaching out the pore-forming material and drying the resultant microporous material. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetals, polyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene, polyisobutylene, polytetrafluorethylene and synthetic rubbers isomerized or chlorinated. Preferred proportions are 14 parts resin to 24 solvent. Specified solvents are isophorone, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran and mesityl oxide. Specified pore-formers are starch, and the alkaline and alkaline earth carbonates and bicarbonates, and they may be mixed with water or dilute acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. A wetting agent such as an alkyl aryl polyether alcohol or an alkyl aryl sulphonate may also be present. The product may be used for battery separators. Specification 565,022 is referred to.
