Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a saponified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer with high whiteness uniformly saponified to its internal structure saponifying an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer in a heat-molten and kneaded condition by using a high-temp. aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution.
CONSTITUTION: In a resin melting and kneading apparatus such as a heating roll, an extruder, a Banduary mixer or the like, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) having <70wt% vinyl acetate content is converted to a molten condition by heating and, thereafter, an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution of a concn. of from 20wt% to saturated concn. is added to advance saponification reaction in a molten and kneaded condition. As alkali metal hydroxide to be used, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or the like are mentioned and an amount of alkali metal hydroxide to be used is 1W1.2mol to 1mol of a vinyl acetate unit within EVA to be saponified correspondint to a desired saponification degree. The temp. during the saponification reaction, is pref. 100W200°C.
