Abstract

PURPOSE: A specifically composed ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is combined with a specific amount of solvent of methanol and sec-butanol and a catalyst and the reaction is effected by heating to produce a uniformly saponified product without fusion of the copolymer with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: In the heterogeneous saponification of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing less than 50wt% of vinyl acetate, 100pts.wt. of the particulate copolymer are combined with 150W1,000pts. of a mixture of methanol and/or ethanol and sec-butanol, in which the proportion of sec-butanol is 15W80wt%, and 0.05W10 equivalent amount of a catalyst such as sodium hydroxide and they are made to react at a temperature lower than 90°C, thus producing the saponified product with industrial advantage.
EFFECT: The product saponified in a mixed medium shows much increased adhesion strength and cleaning resistance in comparison with the product saponified in a sole medium.
