Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the highly saponified title copolymer, economically, by the non-uniform saponification of ethylene-vinyl acetate pellets comprising heating of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer pellets dispersed in an alcohol under inert gas pressure without melting the pellet.
CONSTITUTION: Pellets of an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer pref. containing 10W 50 wt% of vinyl acetate, are dispersed in 1W10 times volume of a lower alcohol such as ethanol, n-propanol, etc., and heated at 50W95°C in the presence of 1W30 wt%, pref. 5W20 wt% (based on the copolymer) of an alkaline catalyst such as sodium hydroxide, sodium methoxide, etc., under an inert gas pressure of 5W50 kg/cm2, while preventing the melting of the pellets. The saponification of the copolymer proceeds rapidly by this process, and a highly saponified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer can be obtained.
