Abstract

Powdered organic chemical substances which are rubber accelerators, retarders, or antioxidants are shaped into pellets or granules by the use of a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene as binding agent. Substances specified are 2-mercapto benzthiazole, dibenzthiazyl disulphide, N-cyclohexylbenzthiazyl-2-sulphenamide, N-tertiary-butyl benzthiazyl-2-sulphenamide, N-tertiary-octylbenz thiazyl-2-sulphenamide, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, tetraethyl thiuram disulphide, zinc diethyl p dithiocarbamate, diphenyl guanidine, di-o-tolyguanidine, and the zinc salt of 2-mercapto benzthiazole. The polymer may be polytetrafluoroethylene or a mixture thereof with a polymer of butadiene, isoprene, acrylonitrile, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or vinyl acetate or with copolymers of conjugated diolefines and other olefinically unsaturated compounds. The binder may be introduced as an aqueous emulsion or dispersion into an aqueous slurry or suspension of the organic compound. Optional ingredients which may also be present are surfactants such as turkey red oil, alkylated \sH phenol/ethylene oxide condensates, sodium lauryl sulphate or sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate; water-soluble polymers such as gelatin, casein, cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl methyl ether, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, sulphonated polystyrene, sodium polyacrylates, polyacrylamide, hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile or hydrolyzed polyacrylic esters; and plasticizers such as dibutylphthalate or polypropylene adipate. The binding agent may be used in amounts of up to 12%, preferably 1-5%, by weight of the substance to be pelleted. In examples the binding agents are polytetrafluoroethylene; mixtures of butadiene/methyl methacrylate copolymers with polytetrafluoroethylene in which the copolymer predominates in amounts ranging from 3:1 to 15:1; and a mixture of 75% polyvinyl acetate and 25% polytetrafluoroethylene. According to the Provisional Specification polytetrafluoroethylene is of general application as a binding agent for pelleting powders. Specification 830,237 is referred to.
