Abstract

In a process wherein microporous material is produced by mixing together finely divided particles of starch, a vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer, which at a temperature below its softening point is elastic and above it is plastic, and a solvent for the resin, forming the mixture into a shaped article, removing the solvent and treating the article with a hot liquid above the softening point so as to swell the starch particles, the article is treated to solubilize the starch with a liquid, maintained at below the softening point temperature, after which the article is washed and then dried at a temperature not exceeding said softening point. The copolymers are those defined in Specification 576,657, including those with vinyl acetate, ethylacrylate, and vinylidene chloride. The solvent may be removed after the treatment to swell the starch particles and the treated article may be immersed in a water repellent. Silica gel may be deposited within the porous article, e.g. by immersing the washed shaped article in an aqueous solution of sodium silicate and then of aluminium sulphate and then heating the article to shrink the filled pores about the silica gel. Specifications p 565,022, 576,658 and 576,659 also are referred to.
