Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a lens which is optically transparent, is highly resilient and has superior characteristics by treating chitin, chitosan or their deriv. by means of glutaraldehyde or the like thereby cross-linking these.
CONSTITUTION: After chitin, chitosan, or their deriv. is washed with water, it is washed with ethanol or the like and is dried, thence it is dissolved in an aqueous acetic acid soln., to which glutaraldehyde is added. This is put in a lower side lens mold and is uniformly spread, thence air is evacuated under reduced pressure, and the recessed part of an upper side lens mold is pressed to the lower side mold containing chitosan. The entire part of the mold is transferred into a heating oven or the like and is heated to cause cross-linking to take place. The thus formed lens is neutralized in a dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide soln. Thereby, the contact lens which is optically transparent, is highly resilient and has superior characteristic may be obtained.
