Abstract

Micro-porous material suitable for use as separators or diaphragms, especially for electric accumulators, is prepared by incorporating in polyvinyl chloride fine particles of a substance which can be subsequently removed and a solvent for the polyvinyl chloride (which acts as a temporary plasticiser), the resulting "dough" being shaped, the solvent removed and the particles removed so as to leave micropores in the solid and the product dried. In a preferred form of the process, starch or dextrin (screened) and a solvent, e.g. methyl cyclohexanone, cyclohexanone or chlorobenzene are mixed under reflux with polyvinyl chloride. The dough may be extruded on to a conveyer or endless belt and may pass through a heated tunnel or channel, e.g. heated by radiant lamps. The starch or dextrin may be solubilised by treatment with hot sulphuric acid, e.g. dilute acid, with or without first treating it with boiling water to swell the starch and/or hot caustic alkali. When starch is used the dried material may be treated with boiling water, diastase and again with boiling water before final drying. When dextrin is used, the dried material may be treated with boiling water with or without alkali or acid and then drying. The material may be treated also with a wetting out agent before final drying, specified is a highly sulphonated oil, e.g. Calsolene (Registered Trade Mark) oil H.S. Plasticisers may also be incorporated in the polyvinyl chloride, tricresyl phosphate is specified. Fillers, e.g. wood flour and colouring ingredients, may also be added.
