Abstract

Porous sheets are obtained by spreading in sheet form, if desired on a fabric or web, a mass containing 15 to 50 per cent by weight of a plasticized polyvinyl compound, 15 to 50 per cent by weight of viscose and 25 to 50 per cent by weight of a water-soluble salt which acts as a pore-former and does not coagulate the viscose prior to subsequent heating, the sheet then being heated to regenerate the cellulose and wash out the bulk of the salt by means of the water present in the mass, and finally superficially washed to remove any adherent salt and dried. The polyvinyl compound is preferably polyvinyl chloride plasticized with dibutyl phthalate. Viscose or waste viscose having a cellulose content of 7-10 per cent is preferably employed. Specified pore-forming salts are Glauber salt and sodium carbonate having a particle size preferably of below 0.5 mm. Heating is preferably effected at 160 DEG C. To improve adhesion the fabric base may be first impregnated with an acrylic acid dispersion. The sheets may be subsequently dyed and lacquered.
