836,793. Coated polyethylene foils. FARBWERKE HOECHST-AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT VORM. MEISTER, LUCIUS & BRUNING. April 6, 1956 [April 6, 1955], No. 10598/56. Class 140. The permeability of polyethylene foil is reduced by first treating the surface with an oxidizing agent to increase its capacity for being wetted and its adhesive power with respect to coatings and the so-treated surface is coated with an aqueous dispersion of a polymer or copolymer of vinylidene chloride. The oxidizing agent may be air or oxygen, a gaseous halogen or an aqueous solution of a halogen or other oxidizing agent, the treatment taking place between 0‹ and 120‹ C. The copolymer preferably contains more than 50% vinylidene chloride, the other component comprising vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylates or methacrylates.
