Abstract

Keratin and cellulose textile fibres are reacted with one or more ethylenic compounds under free radical initiating conditions in a liquid medium, the weight ratio of liquid to fibres being maintained at less than 20/1. Ethylenic compounds specified are monocarboxylic and polycarboxylic acids and their esters, amides, nitriles and anhydrides, styrene and its derivatives, vinyl and vinylidene halides, esters of unsaturated alcohols, vinyl ketones and vinyl heterocyclic compounds. Free radical initiating conditions may be provided by peroxides, redox systems and azo compounds. The examples describe reacting wool and cotton fibres with acrylonitrile in an aqueous medium containing ferric nitrate, hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid.
