Abstract

Stable aqueous emulsions of polymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers are prepared by heating the monomers, having solubilities in water not exceeding 5% by weight, in aqueous solutions of water-soluble salts of acrylic or methacrylic acids in the presence of peroxy compounds, said solutions containing 1 to 3% of the salts based on the weight of monomers. The monomers may be vinyl or allyl esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, or esters of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic vinylacetic or allylacetic acids, e.g. methyl acrylate. The salts may be ammonium or alkali metal salts, e.g. sodium acrylate. Specified peroxy compounds are hydrogen peroxide, alkali metal and ammonium persulphates, e.g. potassium persulphate, and organic peroxides. Redox systems may be used.
