Abstract

Acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate are copolymerized in an aqueous medium which contains an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid or a water-soluble salt, in an amount not exceeding 5% by weight based on the total weight of the monomers, in the presence of a redox initiator system comprising chloric acid or a chlorite and a source of sulphite or hydrosulphite ions, the components of the redox system being present in amounts such that there are not less than 8 moles of sulphite or hydrosulphite ion per mole chlorate ion available in the aqueous medium. pH is preferably maintained at a value of from 1 to 6.
