Abstract
Divalent palladium compounds are obtained by reacting metallic palladium with chlorine while it is immersed or suspended in a liquid aliphatic primary alcohol. Chlorine is passed into the alcohol containing metallic palladium and when the palladium has dissolved passage of chlorine is stopped and excess metallic palladium added to reduce any tetravalent palladium to the divalent state. Palladous chloride may be obtained by evaporating the solvent, or an aqueous solution of a chloride may be added to obtain a tetrachloropalladate. In examples chlorine is passed into suspensions of palladium in methyl alcohol, and palladous chloride is obtained by evaporation and crystals of potassium and ammonium tetrachloropalladates are obtained by reaction with potassium and ammonium chlorides. Other alcohols mentioned are ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, amyl and n-dodecyl alcohols.
