Abstract
2-Hydroxyalkyl acrylate and methacrylate are prepared by heating in the liquid phase, acrylic or methacrylic acids with an alkylene oxide in the presence, as a catalyst, of pyridine or an alkyl pyridine or a salt thereof with a strong acid so that the final reaction mixture contains the catalyst as a salt. Sulphuric and hydrochloric acids are preferred and the salts may be pyridine or picoline, sulphate or hydrochloride. A temperature of 90-140 DEG C. is preferred and an inhibitor such as nitric oxide may be present. Specification 970,202 is referred to.
