Abstract

2-Hydroxyalkyl acrylates are produced by reacting in the liquid phase and at elevated temperature, an alkylene oxide and acrylic or methacrylic acid in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst and nitric oxide as polymerization inhibitor. The alkylene oxide preferably has 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule and is used in a molar excess. The catalyst may be any tertiary amine but preferably a salt of pyridine or an alkyl pyridine and the reaction temperature may be 100 DEG to 140 DEG C. 0.05 to 5% by weight of nitric oxide is used as inhibitor. The reaction is preferably carried out at superatmospheric pressure.
