1,052,072. Hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1965 [Oct. 13, 1964], No. 41707/64. Addition to 970,202. Heading C2C. 2 - Hydroxyalkyl acrylate and methacrylate are prepared by reacting alkylene oxide and acrylic or methacrylic acids in the liquid phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a solid anion exchange resin containing quaternary ammonium groups as a catalyst and nitric oxide as a polymerization inhibitor. Ethylene, propylene and butylene oxides are mentioned and a cross-linked polystyrene resin with quaternary ammonium chloride groups is used as the catalyst. Inhibitors such as hydroquinone or paramethoxy phenol may also be present.
