Abstract

b -Hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids are made by the esterification of the corresponding acid with an alkylene oxide preferably C2 to C4 in the presence of a quaternary ammonium group containing anion exchange resins, the moisture content of which is not in excess of 40% wt/wt. The alkylene oxide may contain a halogen atom or an aromatic nucleus and preferred materials include ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, styrene oxide epichlorohydrins. The examples describe the syntheses of b -hydroxy ethyl acrylate and methacrylate, b -hydroxypropyl acrylate, 3-chloro - 2 - hydroxypropyl acrylate and 2-phenyl-2-hydroxyethyl acrylate.
