Abstract

b -Hydroxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate is made by esterifying acrylic or methacrylic acid with ethylene carbonate in the presence of a catalyst comprising a tertiary amine, especially pyridine, quinoline, ethyl pyridine, b -picoline or a mixture thereof, and an ion exchange resin, containing a multiplicity of quaternary ammonium groups, preferably wherein the quaternary ammonium groups contain at least one alkanol substituent. The reaction is preferably effected at 80 DEG to 125 DEG C., and between 4.5 and 9 ats. A solvent may be employed. A commercial ion exchanger obtainable under the Registered Trade Mark "Dowex" is employed in the examples, together with pyridine.
