Abstract

1293971 Modified polyepoxides SHOWA HIGHPOLYMER CO Ltd 21 July 1970 35324/70 Headings C3B and C3P Unsaturated ester resins are prepared by reaction with heating of a polyepoxide (I) and an unsaturated monobasic acid (II) in the presence of a catalyst which is an addition compound (III) of a secondary amine and an acid I may be a polyglycidyl ether. II may be acrylic or methacrylic acid. III may be dimethylamine-, diethylamine- or dibutylaminehydrochloride, diethylamine formate or acetate, BF 3 .Et 2 NH addition product or N-methylaniline sulphate. Reaction between I and II may take place in the presence of a polymerizable monomer, e.g. a (meth)acrylic ester or styrene. I and II may also be reacted in the presence of a saturated mono- or poly-basic acid or an unsaturated polybasic acid (or anhydrides of the polybasic acid); a polymerization inhibitor may also be present during reaction. The unsaturated esters, optionally together with other unsaturated monomer, may be polymerized using a free radical catalyst.
