Abstract

1497651 Epoxy resin esters KAO SOAP CO Ltd 25 Feb 1976 [9 April 1975] 07434/76 Headings C3B and C3P Heat resistant modified epoxy resins are prepared by (1) obtaining a resin containing -CH(OH)- groups and terminated by (meth) acryloxy groups by reacting a polyglycidyl ether or ester with (meth) acrylic acid; (2) reacting at 40-130‹ C., the above ester with 0À2 to 1 equivalent, per equivalent of -CH(OH)- groups, of an anhydride of a di-, tri- or tetra-carboxylic acid. Examples of suitable epoxy resin starting materials are: a diglycidal of bisphenol A; a polyglycidyl ether of a novolak; and diglycidyl orthophthalate. The anhydride may be of maleic, phthalic, succinic, tetrahydrophthalic, trimellitic or pyromellitic acid. The resins may be polymerized by free radical polymeriation, optionally in the presence of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene or vinyl toluene.
