Abstract
2-Hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates are prepared by reacting acrylic and methacrylic acids with alkylene oxide in the liquid phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of nitric oxide as a polymerization inhibitor, and a solid anion-exchange resin containing basic nitrogenous groups with trivalent nitrogen atoms which is insoluble in the reaction mixture, as a catalyst. Anion exchange resins may be cross-linked polystyrenes with a mixed aliphatic amine group present as a mineral acid salt, or with vinyl pyridine copolymerized therein, or thermosetting resins prepared by the condensation of aniline with formaldehyde, or formaldehyde and phenol. Ethylene, propylene and butylene oxides, epichlorhydrin and styrene oxides are mentioned as the alkylene oxides.
