1297985 Hydroxy alkyl acrylates and methacrylates MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL CO Inc 4 June 1970 [5 June 1969] 27093/70 Heading C2C In the preparation of hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate by reacting the acid with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor and a catalyst comprising at least one trivalent iron compound at least one divalent tin compound soluble in the reaction mixture is added to the reaction mixture during or after the reaction to prevent or reduce the formation of diesters. The product is distilled to recover the ester. The tin compound may be added to terminate the reaction or after cooling and degassing to remove the alkylene oxide. Conventional polymerization inhibitors may be used and examples describe the use of ethylene, propylene or butylene oxides.
