Abstract

1,140,087. Itaconic acid esters. PFIZER Ltd. 21 March, 1967 [29 March, 1966; 27 Oct.. 1966], Nos. 13716/66 and 48222/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Novel esters of itaconic acid of the general formula where R is an ethylene group, or an alkyl or aryl substituted ethylene group, and x is 1 or 2, are prepared by the homogeneous reaction of itaconic acid with a 1,2-alkylene oxide or an alkyl- or aryl-substituted 1,2-alkylene oxide in the absence of a catalyst or in the presence of suitable catalysts, e.g. lithium compounds and compounds of transition metals in their divalent or trivalent states. A solvent is preferably used. In order to form the mono-(hydroxyalkyl)-itaconate as the major product, from about 1À0 to 1À3 molar proportions of alkylene oxide are reacted with the acid, while the use of 1À4 to 2À0 molar proportions of alkylene oxide yields the mono-(hydroxy-alkoxyalkyl)- itaconate as the major product. The invention also comprises mixtures of the novel monoesters with each other and/or with itaconic acid and diesters of itaconic acid. The monoesters may be polymerized with a variety of other monomers and with each other.
