Abstract

Mercaptoalkyl esters of phenol carboxylic acids (I) useful as polymer stabilisers. G5-. Of formula I (where R is an alkylene group, R' is a direct linkage, a (halogen-substd) alkylene group or -CH2-CZY where Z is H or a (cyclo)-alkyl, or aralkyl group and Y is Z or the group and R2 and R3 are hydrocarbon groups). Preferred I are mercaptoethyl esters of hydroxy di(cyclo)alkylbenzyl-propionic acids, particularly with the OH groups in the o- or p-position to the carboxylic acid group. Methyl, tert-butyl and alpha-methylcyclohexyl are the preferred (cyclo)alkyl substitutents. Compounds I containing a dialkyl-phenol group, preferably a 2,6-dialkyl phenol group are useful as heat stabilisers for polymers such as polyolefins (polypropylene), polyesters or polyethers.
