Abstract
1,137,071. Hydroxyalkyl acrylates or methacrylates. JAPAN GAS-CHEMICAL CO., Inc. 28 April, 1966, No. 18757/66. Heading C2C. Hydroxyalkyl acrylates or methacrylates are prepared by heating acrylic or methacrylic acid, 1À-1À7 moles of an alkylene oxide per mole of acrylic or methacrylic acid, 0À2 to 5% by weight of the acid of an iron (III) compound as catalyst with 0À02-2 parts by weight per part of iron, of copper, mercury, chromium or iodine or a compound of copper, mercury or chromium at between 50‹ and 120‹ C. The catalyst may be dissolved in the acid and the oxide added as liquid or gas. The iron compound may be a halide, thiocyanate, nitrate, carbonate, sulphate or organic acid salt and a polymerization inhibitor such as tannic acid or N,N<SP>1</SP>-di-2- naphthyl-p.phenylene diamine may be present. Hydroquinone may be used as an inhibitor, but a chromium compound must be used as the promotor with an additional alkali metal, alkaline earth metal compound, ammonia, a quaternary ammonium compound, an amine or amine salt and pyridine or salts thereof to prevent quinone formation. In a purification process for the acrylates and methacrylates containing hydroquinone a compound of chromium together with from 0À05 to 5% by weight of the above additives are added and the esters distilled from the resultant mixture.
