Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction between an alkylene oxide and acrylic or methacrylic acid is effected in a specific molar proportion in the presence of a catalyst of amine and/or quarternary ammonium salt to produce title compound used as a fiber treating agent with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between an alkylene oxide and acrylic or methacrylic acid in the presence of a catalyst of amine such as trialkylamine and/or quarternary ammonium salt such as tetraalkyl ammonium chloride is effected in such a molar proportion that the amount of acrylic or methacrylic acid is always kept in excess of the alkylene oxide, preferably at a molar ratio showned by the equation to give β-hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate used as fiber treating agent or modifier for coating and polymer with inhibition of the formation of diacrylate of dimethacrylate as a stable solution. The reaction mixture can be stored for a long period of time and used directly as a product.
