1,242,980. Preparation of carbalkoxyalkyl esters of α,#-unsaturated acids. NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT MONOMEROV DLYA SINTETICHESKOGO KAUCHJKA. 12 Dec., 1969, No. 60734/69. Heading C2C. Carbalkoxyalkyl esters of α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared by heating an ester of a halogen-substituted carboxylic acid with an alkali metal salt of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst comprising a tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt. The reactants are preferably XACOOR<SP>1</SP> and CH 2 = C(R)COOM in which X is Cl, Br or I, A is a C 1-6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-6 alkyl radical, R is H or CH 3 and M is alkali metal. The ester to salt molar ratio is advantageously 1: 1 to 4: 1 and the reaction may be performed in an inert solvent such as acetonitrile, toluene, dimethylformamide or dimethylsulphoxide in the presence of a radical polymerization inhibitor. Suitable catalysts are triethylamine, tetramethylammonium chloride, pyridine, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride and tetraethylammonium bromide. In the examples the novel compounds carbethoxymethylacrylate, carbisopropoxymethyl methacrylate, 4 - carbmethoxybutyl methacrylate, 4 - carbethoxybutyl methacrylate, 6 - carbmethoxyhexyl methacrylate, 4- carbmethoxybutyl acrylate and 6-carbmethoxy acrylate are prepared.
