Abstract

1,181,509. Unsaturated esters. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 20 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 38384/69. Divided out of 1,181,508. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises novel esters containing active methylene groups of the formula wherein R 1 is H or alkyl and R 2 is -R<SP>11</SP>-OCO-CH 2 -X, R<SP>11</SP> being an alkylene group and X being aliphatic acyl or -CN; or R 1 is -R<SP>1</SP>-O-CO-CH 2 X, R<SP>1</SP> being an alkylene group and X being as defined above, and R 2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl. In examples (1) 2- acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate is prepared by reacting 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with diketene in the presence of hydroquinone (polymerization inhibitor); (2) 2-acetoacetoxyethyl acrylate is prepared by a somewhat analogous reaction as in (1) in the presence of tri-ethylamine; (3) ethyl α-(acetoacetoxymethyl)-acrylate is prepared by reacting ethyl α-(hydroxymethyl)-acrylate with diketene in the presence of p-(p-toluenesulphonamido)-diphenyl amine (polymerization inhibitor); and (4) 2-cyanoacetoxyethyl methacrylate is prepared by treating cyanoacetic acid with PCl 5 to produce cyanoacetyl chloride, and reacting the latter with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The novel esters are used for forming interpolymers having application in photographic materials.
