Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Compounds of the general formula wherein R is -C(R 2 )(R<SP>1</SP> 2 )-(CH 2 ) n X<SP>1</SP>, C 4-10 tertiary aliphatic or tertiary cycloaliphatic of up to 10C atoms; R 2 is C 1-8 alkyl; R1 2 is C 1-8 alkyl or cyano; n = 1-6, X is -COHal, -OCOHal, -COOCOR 4 or Hal is Cl or Br; R 3 is a trivalent aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical; R 4 is aromatic or aliphatic radical; X<SP>1</SP> is -OCOHal, -COOCOR 4 or as Formula I above and X = X<SP>1</SP> when R is C(R 2 R1 2 )-(CH 2 ) n X<SP>1</SP>, are prepared (a) by treating the corresponding acid with thionyl chloride to provide -COCl groups; (b) by treating a suitable alcohol with phosgene to give a chloroformate; (c) by reacting a suitable alcohol with a chloroformyl-anhydride or (d) by condensing an acid chloride with an acid. In the examples are prepared, for example, 4 - t - butylazo - 4 - cyanovaleryl chloride, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- azobis - (4 - cyano - n - pentyl chloroformate), 4 - (4 - t - butylazo - 4 - cyanopentoxycarbonyl) phthalic anhydride, 4 - t - butylazo - 4 - cyanovaleroyl pivaloyl chloride. The intermediates cis- and trans - 4,4<SP>1</SP>- azobis - (4 - cyanovaleric acid), 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azobis(5- hydroxy - 2 - methylvaleronitrile) and 2 - t - butylazo - 2 - cyano - 5 - hydroxypentane are prepared.
