Abstract

1,181,508. Coating. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 20 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 56867/ 66. Headings B2E and B2K. [Also in Division G2] Support materials are coated with a layer comprising an addition polymer having side chains containing an active methylene group, the active methylene group being attached to the main polymer chain by a non-aromatic chain containing at least 3 carbon atoms in the chain and the proportion by weight of active methylene groups in the polymer being at least 0.1%. (The term "active methylene group" means a methylene group which is located between, and bonded directly to, two electron-withdrawing groups such as carbonyl.) Preferred polymers contain units of an ester containing an active methylene group and corresponding to the formula: wherein R 1 is H or alkyl and R, is -R"- O-CO-CH 2 -X, R" being an alkylene group and X being aliphatic acyl or -CN; or R 1 is -R 1 -O-CO-CH 2 X, R<SP>1</SP> being an alkylene group containing at least two C atoms in the alkylene chain and X being as defined above, and R 2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl. Such units may be copolymerised with units of unsaturated vinyl esters, amides, nitriles, ketones, halides, ethers, acids and esters thereof, olefins, diolefins, N-vinyl heterocyclic compounds and sulphobetaines. Suitable support materials include films of cellulose acetate, polyvinyl acetal, polystyrene, polyolefins, polycarbonate or polyester, as well as glass, paper and wood; supports such as paper may be pre-coated with α-olefin polymers.
