Abstract

Acrylic compounds are hydrodimerized by the action of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal amalgam in the presence of an inorganic or organic acid at 0-50 DEG C., by carrying out the reaction in a medium of liquid consistency containing 1-80% by weight of at least one acrylic compound selected from acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic esters and methacrylic esters, 10-95% by weight of at least one amide selected from nitrogen substituted and unsubstituted non-dimerizing carboxylic acid amides, sulphonamides and inorganic acid amides and 0-50% by weight of water, the concentration of the acid in the reaction mixture being maintained at between 0.1 and 100 milliequivalents per litre of reaction mixture. The acrylic compound suitably contains a polymerization inhibitor and the reaction may be effected discontinuously, semi-continuously or entirely continuously. In examples, acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate, methacrylonitrile and mixtures of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile and acrylonitrile and ethyl acrylate are reacted, the acids employed being acetic, hydrochloric and sulphuric and the amides employed being formamide, dimethylformamide, acetamide and p-toluene sulphonamide.
