Abstract

N-substituted or unsubstituted eutactic polymethacrylimides or methacrylimide copolymers are produced by reacting eutactic polymethacrylic acid or an ester thereof with ammonia, a primary amine or a mixture thereof. Amines specified are methylamine, ethylamine, butylamine, hexylamine, cyclohexylamine, decylamine, octadecylamine, aniline and benzylamine. The reaction may be carried out either under anhydrous conditions or with the use of water as a solvent for the ammonia and/or amine; in the former case an alkali metal or alkaline earth amide may be employed as an p imidization catalyst and in the latter case an alkali metal hydroxide may be employed for the same purpose. Methacrylimide polymers containing other groups, e.g. carboxyl, ester and amide, may be obtained by varying the conditions of the reaction and by the choice of starting eutactic polymer. The examples describe the application of the process to isotactic and syndiotactic polymethyl methacrylates, but reference is also made to the use of polyalkyl methacrylates containing up to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group.
