Abstract
936,662. Mineral fibre sheets &c. GRUNZWEIG & HARTMANN A.G. March 17, 1960 [March 19, 1959], No. 9369/60. Class 96. Sheets or other bodies, which may be of any desired shape, are produced by adding mineral fibres to an aqueous suspension of substantially undissolved starch, forming the desired body from the said mixture by removing most of its water content, gelatinizing the starch in the residual water contained by the body by exposure to heat in an atmosphere saturated with water vapour, and evaporating the residual water at a higher temperature in an atmosphere not saturated with water vapour. The mixture may also contain a carbamide-aldehyde resin precondensate, a " polyethylene derivative," e.g. polyvinyl acetate, which may be chemically or thermally precipitated on to the fibres before the mixture is dewatered. Fibres of high absorptive capacity, e.g. chrysotile asbestos or cellulose, fillers, pigments or stabilizers may also be present. The gelatinization of the starch may be accelerated by the addition of catalysts, e.g. aluminium acetate. A small amount of starch may be dissolved in the water before the rest of the starch is suspended in it.
