Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A porous film is made by stretching a film of synthetic polymer, containing foaming agent, to increase its original area by 10-1500%, terminating the stretching, foaming the polymer by heat treatment and then cooling. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile and may contain a plasticizer, e.g. a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride or ethylene, dioctyl phthalate or chlorinated paraffins, and a foaming aid, cell regulator or opacifier, e.g. polystyrene, cellulose ethers or esters, kaolin or TiO 2 . The foaming agent may be a hydrocarbon or ketone, e.g. toluene or methylethyl ketone and azodiisobutyronitrile and tetrahydrofuran. The films may be first made by casting solutions of the polymer in a solvent, which can also act as foaming agent.
