Abstract

696,563. Copying by means of radiant heat. DICK CO., A. B. July 25, 1951 [Aug. 8, 1950], No. 17627/51. Class 98 (ii). [Also in Group XVI] A stencil for use in duplicating is produced from an original copy by placing a film 10 of thermoplastic ink-impervious material in surface contact with the copy 11, and subjecting the copy to infra-red rays so that radiations are absorbed by the material in the dark letter parts 12 on the copy and converted into heat, the heat causing openings 14, Fig. 2, to form in corresponding areas of the plastic film through which ink may pass. Preferably the film is a stretched, highly orientated plastic film having a sensitivity to heat of the kind which causes rearrangement of the heated portions of the film into a lattice work of resinous concentrations and a plurality of openings through which ink may pass. The invention comprises also a stencil blank formed of a thin film of heat-sensitive plastic material with or without a reinforcing fabric connected thereto or embedded therein. Suitable plastics are polyvinylidene chloride and copolymers thereof with vinyl chloride or vinyl acetate plasticized as with polychlorobiphenyl, polychlorobenzene, polochloro diphenyl oxide, dibenzyl ether, aralkyl ethers, tricresyl phosphate, hexachloroethylene, styrene oxide, or phenoxy propylene oxide; polystyrene (molecular weight 25,000-65,000) plasticized with tricresyl phosphate, chlorinated biphenyl, or dibutyl phthalate; nylon plasticized with ptoluene sulphonamide; polychlorotrifluoro- or polytetrafluoro-ethylene; polyethylene; rubber hydrochloride; styrene-isobutylone copolymer ; styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer; polyvinyl butyral; polyvinyl acetals; cellulose esters or ethers such as ethyl cellulose or cellulose propionate-butyrate, polyvinyl chloride resin or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer plasticized with dibutyl-, diamyl-, dioctyl-, or dibutyl cellosolve - phthalates (" Cellosolve " is a Registered Trade Mark), tricresyl phosphate, or triglycol di-(2-ethyl hexanoate), or in the case of the vinyl copolymer glycerol esters, camphor, or triacetin. The plasticizers are added if desired to lower the softening temperature of the film.
