A flexible printing plate consists of a base of nitrile rubber and a printing surface comprising a thermoplastic synthetic resinous powder, based on vinyl-chloride vinyl-acetate copolymer resins, the base and the printing surface being fused together in the absence of any intervening adhesive. The image on the printing surface may be formed by projecting a negative, produced for example by a photographic process, on to said printing surface which is subsequently etched, or washed-out with water. A preformed sheet of a flexible thermoplastic synthetic resinous material based on polyvinyl resins may be placed between the nitrile rubber base and the printing surface and in order to prevent shrinkage of materials forming the plate a sheet of cotton or linen may be inserted between the preformed sheet and the rubber base. In the method of making such a plate the powder is placed in a mould and covered with the preformed sheet of flexible resinous material which in turn is covered by the base material, the three components being fused together in a mould under heat and pressure, without the use of any adhesive, the temperature range being between 140‹ and 165‹ C. and the pressure range between 450 and 1120 lbs. per square inch of mould area. In a particular plate for printing text pages only the printing surface consists of a thermoplastic synthetic resinous powder " VYNS-3 " based on vinylchloride vinyl-acetate copolymer resins. If desired, the powder may be dissolved and used as a paste or liquid. The surface material is covered by a sheet of thermoplastic synthetic resinous material " Vitrone A2KK " and finally an uncured nitrile rubber base is placed over the sheet before subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure. When it is desired to print material which contains half-tone and text the text portion of the printing surface may be powdered " VYNS-3 " whilst the half-tone area is of preformed " VR150 "-a vinyl-chloride acetate copolymer.
