Abstract

A transfer sheet suitable for use in a thermographic copying process comprises a flexible base bearing a substantially continuous coating which softens and becomes tacky without melting to a liquid over a temperature range of several degrees in excess of 100 DEG C. and comprises a binder having a broad fusing and melting range and infra-red absorbing and optically and magnetically detectable colouring material, whereby images transferred to a master sheet from the transfer sheet gradually soften and become tacky without melting to a liquid under the influence of infra-red radiation and adhere to a copy sheet placed in contact with the image areas of the master, so that on stripping the copy sheet from the master it bears an image that may be optically and magnetically scanned. Typically the coating on the transfer sheet, which may comprise a base of paper or plastic consists of one or more waxes with polyisobutene or chlorinated rubber or other thermoplastics such as ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyrate or chlorinated biphenyl resins together with an oil and optionally lanolin to give a broad melting range below 250 DEG C. and black iron oxide alone or with carbon black, or iron filings or iron powder with one or more of carbon black, nigrosine or other radiation-absorbing pigments. The master sheet which may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polythene, or polyvinyl fluoride is preferably imaged by typing with the transfer sheet coating contacting the rear of the sheet.
